Giotto has been hailed as probably the most influential artist of the entire Renaissance and the equal of the great artists of antiquity. He was one of the earliest artists to be written about in his own lifetime, and Italian critics held him up as the ideal for the next five centuries.
The course analyses major works such as the Arena Chapel and his frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels at Santa Croce. It also discusses his patrons, his relationship to Dante and Boccaccio, and his legacy.
