Daniel Mytens and the Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting in England

This lecture will focus on a painter who has all but disappeared from history.  Though he was intimately connected with both the courts of James I and Charles I little is written about Daniel Mytens by art historians compared to other artists of this period.

I will look at the development of his painting style, his influences and the influence patronage on artists from abroad including Mytens’s intimate links with the English court amid the rise of Charles I and the spread and fashion in England for Dutch and Flemish artists.

This lecture will ultimately conclude with the arrival of a new style of painting in England that becomes the new fashion with the coming of Anthony van Dyck.
